Undermounted Basins: Designed For The Subtle Approach
If the subtle approach to life is what takes your fancy, then an undermounted basin is the only option. This clever design seamlessly disappears into your worktop to bring the minimalist, modern style straight to your bathroom.
Situated under the worktop, undermounted basins are an unobtrusive take on the countertop basin.
Undermounted Vs. Recessed: What’s the Difference?
A common confusion lies in the difference between undermounted and recessed basins. But this need not be confusing as an undermounted basin is fitted to the underside of your counter, creating a seamless worktop, whereas a recessed basin is designed to be cut into the counter, leaving the rim of the basin exposed.
Practical Space-Saving Design:
Designed primarily to fit within a unit, undermounted basins (or underslung basins as they are sometimes known) offer practicality and an aesthetically pleasing design. With bathrooms being made increasingly smaller, and cloakrooms becoming ever more popular, these designs provide a practical solution: providing not only great storage space, but the ability to hide unsightly pipes and bottle traps.
Undermount basins provide you with the functionality of a basin, but without the need of having a domineering white pedestal on display: something which cannot be said for traditional sinks. What’s more, as the sink remains sunk into the rim of the countertop, you are awarded with extra counter space, ideal for storing toiletries.
Creating a Clutter-Free Area:
Undermounted sinks make cleaning a breeze as you won’t have to navigate around any tricky pipework and, as there is no rim, you can quickly sweep any debris straight into the basin. Moreover, with zero tap holes, an undermount sink allows the entire wash area to remain uncluttered.
A Quality Ceramic Basin:
All of our undermount basins are manufactured to a high standard using white ceramic. Also called vitreous china, ceramic is made from a mix of clays. As the clay and glaze are baked at the same time, ceramic is stain proof and waterproof throughout. They are, therefore easy to maintain and easy to clean.
What About Installation?
Installation can prove trickier than with traditional designs, but this doesn’t have to be particularly tricky. Simply apply a silicone sealant to the topside of an undermounted basin and this will form a suitable adhesive to secure the basin in place. Just make sure you allow the sealant 24 hours to cure.
What must be remembered is that, as the cut edge will be exposed, an undermounted sink will require a solid worktop (such as marble, granite or stone). All of the basins sold at Splashdirect are supplied with a cutting template to allow for ease of installation and, where necessary, fixing bolts are included to offer that added security.
What Else Will I Need For My Undermount Basin?
In order to make your sink fully functioning, you may need to purchase the following items:
1. Taps: When choosing taps, you will need to establish the correct compatibility with your current water system. Failure to marry these up correctly and it may result in your new tap ‘dribbling’ when it is turned on.
2. A Basin Waste: There are two types of wastes available, slotted and unslotted: which one you require is dependent upon whether your basin has an overflow or not.
- If it has an overflow, then you'll need a slotted waste.
- If it doesn’t have an overflow, then you'll need unslotted waste.
3. A Bottle Trap: Acting as a seal to block smells coming up from the waste pipe, these are extremely important.
Undermounted basins are not the focal point for your bathroom; but, rather accentuate beauty and are a convenient option for any family bathroom or cloakroom.
