Get Inspired Before Buying for Your Bathroom

It might be tempting to begin buying fixtures and other items for your bathroom the very second you decide that it is time to give the room a overhaul but this is often a foolish move. People who do not take the time to decide on a colour scheme and/or layout for the room before parting with their cash will often find that they end up with items that they cannot use in their final bathroom design.

Excellent places to source inspiration for your bathroom include any luxury hotels that you have stayed at in the past (or are due to stay at soon), bathroom showrooms and the photo-sharing social network Pinterest. Taking photographs of any items that you might consider for inclusion at a later date is advised.

Consider Who Will Use Your Bathroom

Whilst glass and stainless steel fittings are no doubt attractive, they may not be the best choice for any bathroom that will see a lot of use from children for they are bound to soon become laden with fingerprints! If you happen to be the mother of a child that loves getting caked in mud a little too often, it goes without saying also that you would probably wish to avoid the colour white – and other light colours – in your bathroom (unless of course, you are willing to clean the room after every bath time!)

The age of those using your bathroom on a regular basis may also affect the chosen height placement of fixtures such as the wash basin and towel holder.

Match Bathroom Accessories to the Chosen Decor

Since the bathroom is often considered a space for relaxation, having too many different colours present in this room is not wise, for this could over-stimulate the mind of someone soaking in the tub.

Choosing bathroom accessories that closely adhere to your selected colour scheme then is advisable, though you should not be afraid to use a clashing colour should you be able to acquire all of your bathroom accessories in this same hue. For example; bright green bathroom accessories could work well with a slate grey and black colour scheme so long as there is colour uniformity across items such as soap and toothbrush holders, bathmats and/or shower curtains (etc.)

It might be the case that you have chosen a theme in additional to a colour scheme for your bathroom. Dolphins, sea shells or nautical anchors are example of themes with might be applied to a bathroom. Locating and including accessories that match a selected theme is too wise, though be sure not overdo it – dolphin embellishments on absolutely everything in the bathroom can really be too much for the eyes!

Whilst you could use simple plastic storage tubs to hold all of your lotions and potions this is hardly a stylish solution!

Measure
To ensure you get the correct seat for your toilet you will need to take a few measurements before you order. So arm yourself with a pen, piece of paper and a tape measure.

Probably best to measure your old seat starting with:

• Length from front to back (A)
• Width across at the widest point (B)
• The width taken from the centres of the two holes in the toilet where the hinges fix in. This is known as the hinge adjustment width (C)

Now you have these measurements you need to know what kind of hinges your new toilet seat will need to come with as these will differ according to the type of toilet you have.

If you can see or reach under the back of your pan (or bowl as some like to call it) and can feel a nut/bolt, this will be a toilet seat with a standard style hinge. If you cannot see or feel the hinges then you most probably have a Back-to-wall or Wall Hung toilet and this will need a toilet seat with a Top Fix Hinge.

Fitting Your Toilet Seat
This should be pretty straight forward and usually requires no tools as the securing nut is very often a wing type which can be tightened firmly by hand.

Top Fix Hinges work by the use of a rubber grommet that when tightened expands into the hole securing the hinges in place. These will require the use of a screw driver to tighten.

Most hinges have a minimum and maximum adjustment width achieved by the fixing shaft that attaches to the seat either swinging out or sliding in relation to the bolt/grommet that fixes to the toilet pan.

And there’s not much more to it really! Your new toilet seat should be securely in place. Keep an eye on the hinges and should they rust or decay you should replace them and can do so with simple hinge packs also available at Splash!

Shabby chic interior design differs slightly from traditional vintage décor (which – just like shabby chic – utilises old, often distressed furniture and furnishings or new items that have been designed to appear antique) in that the style is slightly more feminine in appearance. This style is perfect for the bathroom then, for this is where the majority of women will pamper themselves for the day and/or week ahead.

This style works particularly well in old-fashioned bathrooms (which might comprise countertop basins, cast iron baths and/or unconcealed plumbing) which the owner would prefer to update rather than lumber the cost of installing a new suite. Shabby chic can work well in contemporary bathroom too however. This style has few rules and allows designers to have fun and let their imaginations run wild.

You might be wondering how you can achieve the look in your own bathroom. The following should inspire you to get started – no shabby chic washroom should be without at least a couple of these five accessories:

Antique Mirrors

Whether you decide to buy an antique mirror-proper or a new one made to that style, be sure to select a mirror with curly embellishments around its frame and/or with intricate embossing. If you bathroom is small (making it difficult to hang a larger sized mirror) smaller shabby chic vanity mirrors make a great alternative. Choosing a mirror with a frame that is a colour other than gold will aid the distinction between standard vintage design and the shabby chic look you desire. You can even paint a frame for a mirror that is truly unique.

Cast Iron Baths

If you are not lucky enough to already have an old-fashioned cast iron bath installed in your bathroom, fear not for these can often be sourced from antique shows or at reclamation yards. If you do struggle to find yourself one of these vintage tubs, then contemporary free-standing baths with ornate legs can work equally well. Some of these are designed to look rustic or you can rough one up yourself using hard-grit sandpaper (though this is obviously not recommended if the tub was a costly purchase!)

Vintage Wallpaper

Many people wrongly think that wallpaper has no place in a bathroom but this is not true particularly when it comes to shabby chic design. Choosing splash-proof wallpaper is advisable for obvious reasons though there is nothing to stop you from decorating a singular wall (that is less likely to come into contact with moisture) of your bathroom should you stumble across a to-die-for roll that is not water resistant. In fact, this only adds to the mismatched element of the style.

Old fashioned Taps and Showerheads

Standard sink and bath taps and showerheads are not nearly quirky enough for shabby chic bathrooms. Large, stylish and genuinely vintage taps can be sourced from reclamation yards, as well as on online auction websites such as eBay but you should ask whether or not the taps have been refurbished. Taps that are not restored might be cheap but it could be expensive to get them readied for re-use in your bathroom. Showerheads meanwhile should be oversized and chrome as standard plastic heads are far less pleasing to the eye.

Grand Light Fittings

Why would anyone go to the effort of transforming a wash space into a shabby chic delight and then light the room using a standard light fitting and a 100W bulb? Small chandeliers add elegance and femininity to a bathroom (larger chandeliers should definitely be reserved for dining and living rooms). Chandeliers need not necessarily be made of glass; black plastic ones also look stunning. If chandeliers are a little too grandiose for your taste, then delicate wall lamps with pull switches can be installed. Whatever option you go for, keep the lighting soft – the bathroom is a place for relaxation!

What You Will Need

• Drill;
• Set of  screwdrivers;
• Spirit level;
• Building sand;
• Cement;
• Sealant gun;
• Adjustable wrench;
• Raw plugs and
• A felt tip pen.

The first step for installing a new shower cubical is to fit the tray.

How to Fit a Shower Tray

NOTE: The following is written on the assumption that the previous shower has already been removed. It is also assumed that you have selected a pre-assembled shower tray that is of the same dimensions as your previous shower in order that the pre existing shower trap/waste outlet hole and access hatch can be utilised. If this is not the case, seeking professional help to create the hole and hatch in your floor is advised.

Another assumption is that you are installing a shower in the corner of a room, meaning that only one side panel and one door panel will need to be fitted. Many of the tips in the ‘How To’ guide however are applicable to four side panel showers also.

Follow these steps to fit your new shower tray:

• Mix yourself some mortar (four parts building sand to one part cement). Once thoroughly mixed, spread a layer (no more than 3 centimetres thick) where the tray is to be affixed;
• Position the tray on top and allow it to bed down into the mortar. Be sure to use a spirit level to ensure the tray is not wonky or uneven;
• One you are satisfied with the position and level of the tray, smooth the edges of the mortar for a non-messy finish. Use a sealant gun around the outside edges of the shower tray that meet the wall of the room and along where the tray meets the floor;
• Leave the tray for 24 hours to dry before attempting to install the cubical.

Extra step:

Use the access hatch to attach the shower trap to the waste outlet and waste outlet pipe (be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions). Use washers and an adjustable wrench to ensure a watertight seal. This step is much easier to complete before the cubical is affixed to the tray.

How to Erect the Shower Cubical

• Use a spirit level to position the channels included with your shower surround in a vertical position on the two corners of your tray that meet the wall and use a water soluble felt tip pen to mark where holes should be drilled;
• Drill the necessary holes, insert raw plugs and then affix the channels to the walls;
• Slide the door and side panels into the relevant channels. Once this has been completed these two sides will need to be connected where they meet (follow the manufacturer’s instructions to do this);
• Use a screwdriver to screw the fixings supplied with your enclosure in order to permanently attach the panels to the channels and
• Seal the external edges where the panels meet the wall. Do not use a sealant gun on the edges internal to the unit.

And that’s it! Be sure to leave your new shower cubical to dry for at least 48 hours before trying it out for the first time.
