Safe & Stylish Bathroom Lighting
When choosing bathroom lighting, it is integral that you take various factors into consideration. Safety is your key concern when it comes to bathroom
lighting, and there are simple ways to make sure that this criteria is well looked after. There are so many lights to choose from at Splash Direct that
you’ll be more than spoilt for choice in the bathroom department.
How to Make your Bathroom a Safe Lighting Haven
While it is tempting to fit your bathroom with lighting that will add mood, such as dimmed lighting, it is important too that you add stark white lighting
to your bathroom that is clear, concise and crisp. This will not only eliminate unlit corners and crannies that are hazardous, but it will also provide you
with the perfect place to groom. Un-shadowed lighting is best for grooming, as it lights up your face perfectly and allows you to groom as well as apply
make-up.
What to Consider when Installing Bathroom Lighting
When installing bathroom lighting, you might want to consider the heights of your whole family instead of simply installing the lights overhead. It is
always a more efficient idea to fit lighting at around forehead height. This provides the best lighting for personal grooming. Vanity or mirror lighting is
also crucial in the bathroom, and there are a few tips and tricks to make the most of this. Install at least one lighting fixture on either side of your
mirror, and make sure that they are at least a foot apart. Correctly fitted lights will minimise shadows underneath your eyes, nose and chin whilst grooming.
Fluorescent lighting is rarely a good choice, as it makes your skin appear washed out and green. Incandescent bulbs, or bulbs that closely resemble daylight
are better choices, as they reflect your natural skin tone and don’t seem forced or fake.
What are Bathroom Electrical Zones?
Lighting should always be safe without any style compromise, and, for this reason, we’ll always ensure that you know where it is safe to fit your bathroom
lights. For the purpose of safe lighting, the bathroom or shower area is divided into ‘zones’. These zones are numbered according to the safe distance away
from a water source the light can be fitted and consequently gives the light fitting an ‘IP’ rating. An IP rating is the degree of protection provided by the
electrical enclosure from intrusion of solid objects such as dust and water. The higher the IP rating the more protected the light fitting is.
- Zone 0 (IP68) – The ultimate in watertight fittings. These lights are suitable for saunas, steam rooms or submersible (down to 9 metres).
- Zone 1 (IP65) – Should be fitted where the fitting may be subjected to a jet of water, for example from a shower handset or body jet.
- Zone 2 (IP44) – Should be fitted wherever the fitting may be splashed, anywhere within 600mm of a basin or similar water source.
- Zone 3 – Suitable for all other areas where jets or splashes of water will not occur.
